Chemical composition and antibacterial activity of essential oils from five culinary herbs of the Lamiaceae family growing in Campania, Southern Italy

Abstract

The essential oils from five culinary herbs of ,Lamiaceae family,viz basil, (Ocimum basilicum L.), mint (Mentha piperita L.), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.), sage (Salvia officinalis L.), thyme (Thymus pulegioides L.), growing wild in Campania (Southern Italy), have been characterized and tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The highest activity was shown by the oils of Thymus pulegioides and Rosmarinus officinalis.
