The INTEGRAL and XMM-Newton View of the Galactic Center

Abstract

We present results obtained with XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL on the region of the Galactic Center. The 2004 XMM-Newton large project dedicated to the study of Sgr A* X-ray flares allowed the detection of two bright such events. The longest of them was also detected in NIR with HST/NICMOS and displayed a variability compatible with periodic modulation at 22 min, possibly linked to the Keplerian period at the last stable orbit of the supermassive black hole of the galactic nucleus. INTEGRAL mapped the Galactic Center in the 20–200 keV range, allowed to obtain the most detailed images of the region in this energy range and detected a source at the very center of the Galaxy which appears constant and probably not connected with Sgr A* or other X-ray point sources of the region.
