Clean Air Act: Requirements for landfills

Abstract

Title 1 of the Clean Air Act (CAA) requires states with nonattainment areas for criteria pollutants (including ozone and oxides of nitrogen [NOx]), to adopt a variety of programs to bring these areas into compliance with relevant standards. One of the programs is the New Source Review (NSR) program that requires major sources to obtain a preconstruction permit. A number of recent and anticipated US EPA actions related to the Clean Air Act (CAA) rules will have a significant effect on landfill owners and operators, requirement compliance with existing, proposed, or soon-to-be-proposed CAA requirements. This article summarizes these actions.
