Abstract
The pathogenicity of Trypanosoma rangeli was studied in 1360 Rhodnius prolixus specimens. The insects of healthy appearance showed a 24.0% infection with T. rangeli while 46.0% of the bugs demonstrating abnormal behavior harbored the trypanosome. The mortality rate of the bugs caught in the field was 87.4% during a 6-week observation period. The results indicate that T. rangeli is highly pathogenic for R. prolixus under natural conditions.
