Abstract
Gastric mucosa of the bullfrog was incubated in vitro in the presence of puromycin and actinomycin D. Stimulation of acid secretion by porcine gastrin and a synthetic gastrin- like pentapeptide was not altered by these inhibitors of protein synthesis. Puromycin but not actinomycin D markedly inhibited the incorporation of 14C-leucine into mucosal protein. It is concluded from these studies that new protein synthesis is not required for the acid stimulating action of gastrin and related peptides on the isolated bullfrog gastric mucosa.
