Abstract
Abnormalities demonstrated in women with idiopathic hirsutism include elevated serum levels of various androgens, increased androgen production rates and decreased levels of sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG). In this study an attempt was made to correlate the severity of hirsutism (as graded by the method of Ferriman and Gallwey) with the levels of serum androgens and SHBG. In the group studied measurement of SHBG appeared to be a better index of the hyperandrogenic state than measurement of androgen levels themselves. Correlations were also made between the Ferriman and Gallwey subscores in the various body sites and the overall severity of hirsutism.
