IMMANENT DUALISM AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO DUALISM AND MONISM: THE WORLD VIEW OF MAX WEBER

Abstract Exploration of the roots of accumulating environmental degradation has reached to the very foundations of Western civilization. The dominant critiques of these foundations primarily focus on two cosmologies: monism and dualism. The purpose of this paper is to examine these foundations from a Weberian perspective and to offer a little known alternative: immanent dualism. This alternative cosmology suggests that religion could help reorganize late industrial capitalism.
