Abstract

Urban forest areas with a high density of users and visitors is increasingly cared for and take on the character of parks:view axes are set out, individual trees that are remarkable are tended and undergrowth cleared so that visitors can feel safe and comfortable. Functions and features, formerly associated with gardens and parks, are thus finding egress in the forest. Are urban forests being transformed from wood providers to parks? The present essay compares features and functions of recreation forests around Berne and Zurich with those of formal gardens and parks.
