Abstract

The polarization of electron-impact light from helium has been measured for the multiplets 2 3P–2 3S (10 829 Å) and 3 3P–2 3S (3889 Å) for electron energies in the range from threshold to 50 eV. For the 2 3P–2 3S multiplet, the observed polarization rises to 21% near threshold and by means of a curve fitting procedure may be extrapolated to (32 ± 6)% at threshold. For the 3 3P–2 3S multiplet, the observed polarization rises to 11% and may be extrapolated to (15 + 3)%.
