Abstract

[1] In the paper “Moisture sources for Central America: Identification of moisture sources using a Lagrangian analysis technique” by A. M. Durán-Quesada et al. (Journal of Geophysical Research, 115, D05103, doi:10.1029/2009JD012455, 2010), Figure 4 (bottom) and Figure 5 present a mistake: owing to an error retrieving QuikScat data, the wind fields are inverted, as can be noticed observing the wind vectors. In order to correct properly this mistake, the data were retrieved again and checked first in the global scale and then in the local scale used for the analysis. Figure 4 (bottom) and Figure 5 were plotted again with the new data. In the new Figures 4 and 5, wind fields are not inverted and wind arrows are now plotted every four points in order to present a more understandable image. An extra modification was performed: instead of showing wind speed contours, zonal wind is now shaded to make more noticeable the importance of the zonal flow. Although the mistake does not interfere with the presented results (moisture analysis was done using ERA40 data), the correction is important, particularly for readers who are not used to working with the local wind circulation in the analyzed region. With the correction the southwesterly flow observed entering northern South America can be correctly identified and the discussion of the possibility of moisture transport due to this wind flow can be followed. (The discussion considered the flow as is now presented, which implies that there are no errors in the discussion because of the problem with the first published Figure 4 (bottom) and Figure 5.)
