Timed to the launch of joint U.S./Japan satellite Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and the Chinese Geostationary Satellite, Fung Yuen‐II (FY‐II), the South China Sea Monsoon Experiment (SCSMEX) is quite literally getting off the ground. SCSMEX is an international field experiment to study the water and energy cycles of the Asian monsoon regions. Its purpose is to better understand the key physical processes in the onset, maintenance, and variability of the monsoon over southeast Asia and southern China. This understanding is expected to lead to improved forecasts of the monsoon.
