The manifestation of the gatekeeping concept in South African newspapers

Abstract

SUMMARY This article investigates by means of content analysis how the content of South African daily newspapers bears relation to the functioning of the gatekeeping process. Five ways in which the gatekeeping concept can function were investigated, namely the general selection of news items, the choice of themes for editorial comment, themes for background articles, front page news items as well as news items with relatively large headings. Results show that the gatekeeping process is different in these five cases. The investigation also indicates that newspapers differ in the way in which the gatekeeping concept is reflected in their content.
