Abstract

The large spontaneous Hall effect which is observed at low temperatures in ferromagnetic Fe and Ni may arise from accidentally degenerate states on the Fermi surface which are mixed by the spin-orbit interaction. The location of the Fermi level deduced from this interpretation agrees with the present knowledge of the Fermi surface in Ni but is not compatible with recent band calculations in Fe.
