Open source license alternatives for software applications

The open source movement has introduced a wealth of software applications that may challenge commercial applications in ease of use, features, and speed. Typically open source applications are available "free-of-charge", but the potential for hidden costs has slowed down their acceptance in commercial settings. In this paper we explore licensing options available to locate and acquire open source software. Finally, we will explore the impact of open source software and the Open Source Initiative approved licenses on commercial applications, and both the legal and illegal trading of software.
