Abstract

Application of anhydrous ammonia fertilizer across the width of applicators is known to be uneven. One of the difficulties in working with anhydrous application equipment is that the anhydrous flowing throughthe system is typically a two-phase (gas and liquid) fluid. Mass flow rate metering and measurement of twophaseflow is difficult, and most flow meters are rated for flow of liquids or gases, not two-phase flow. Equipment, procedures, and analyses were developed for calibration of volumetric flow meters with two-phaseflow. The two-phase flow meter calibration system was calibrated using a liquid test fluid (water). The twophaseflow meter calibration system was then used to calibrate a volumetric flow meter with a liquid test fluid(water). The coefficient of determination (R2) and maximum percent resolution for the calibration of the two-phase flowmeter calibration system using a liquid test fluid (water) were 0.9667 and 5.69%, respectively. The coefficientof determination (R2) and maximum percent resolution for the calibration of the volumetric flow meter using aliquid test fluid (water) with the two-phase flow meter calibration system were 0.9991 and 2.31%, respectively.
