Abstract

Pupae of the sawtoothed grain beetle, Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.), have characteristic lateral projections which are the rudiments of the feature giving this insect its common name. The tips of 12 of the 13 pairs of projections exude a drop (ca. 0.01 μl) of lipoidal material. This substance has no effect on sawtoothed grain beetle behavior over a distance, but it serves to repel predators upon contact.
