Abstract
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) provides an effective way to both store and to transport large quantities of natural gas around the world. The chapter starts with a broad overview of the LNG industry and then compares LNG plant feed with specifications with typical pipeline gas. Next, it discusses the Joule–Thomson cycle, expander cycle, closed and open cycles, cascade cycles, and mixed refrigerant cycles used to liquefy the gas. This is followed by a description of LNG storage tank types. The two types of ocean-going LNG carriers are discussed. Processes for regasification are described. The chapter concludes with an economic overview of liquefaction cost, shipping, and regasification.
