Abstract

The increased cost of electrical energy and increased demand for efficient production of manufactured goods make it imperative that we examine the basic machine in all manufacturing processes. The basic machine common to all manufacturing processes today is the electric motor. In its simplest definition, an electric motor is a machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. How much does it cost to operate a motor? The cost is a product of the inefficiency of the motor and the dollars of electrical energy converted. The factors which affect motor efficiency are reviewed together with considerations in having motors rebuilt to retain or improve their efficiency. All burned-out motors should be screened prior to rewinding to identify those that should be replaced. The screening technique and repair procedure will be reviewed.
