The evolution and present understanding of Quantum Field Theory are reviewed. The profound lessons of Quantum Field Theory are discussed. The attempt to go beyond Quantum Field Theory and construct a unified theory of particles, forces and quantum gravity is described; with emphasis on the achievements, problems and promises of string theory.
