Abstract
The angular distribution of $\ensuremath{\gamma}$ rays emitted by deformed odd-$A$ nuclei with high spin has been calculated. The results are applicable to emission from states populated during heavy-ion bombardment. The effect of polarization of the spin of the compound nucleus in a plane perpendicular to the heavy-ion beam is considered. Contributions from pure $E2$ and $M1$ radiations, as well as from interference between these two radiations, are included. It is shown how experimentally measured angular distributions can be used as a tool for determining both the magnitude and the relative phase of the amplitude of $E2$ and M1 transitions.
