Abstract

A particular form of electrostatic quadrupole lens has been investigated with the aid of an electron trajectory tracer. The lens consists of two co-axial cylinders, the outer being at cathode potential and the inner at anode potential. Two symmetrically placed longitudinal slots in the inner produce a quadrupole-type field near the axis. Focal length, focal point and spherical aberration coefficient are given as functions of slot length for the two planes of symmetry.
