Abstract
A method of defining a rectangular zone which circumscribes given measured data is discussed in the paper. The computed zone is orientated in an arbitrary direction, determining a rectangle with a minimum area. The method is composed of several phases leading up to a solution of the rectangle, a solution which does not depend on the quantity of information to be covered. Defining a perimeter — closed polygon — which circumscribes the area to be mapped and altering it to a polygon of a convex shape, enables the identification of the required rectangle by an iterative process of a few stages.
