Abstract

Summary Clinically manifest upper respiratory disease was described in Croatia as early as 1935. The etiology was not studied in either that epidemic of the disease or in later ones. A total of 463 horse sera were examined for HI antibodies against virus A1‐equine/Prague/56. A significant titer (1: 32 or higher) was found in 69.1 percent of all sera examined. Neither the location nor the sex of the animals produced an effect upon the percent of sera with a significant titer. The percent of sera with a significant titer was somewhat lower in younger animals. HI antibodies against virus PI 3 were investigated in 567 equine sera. Considerable differences in the number of positive sera were observed between sera from location A (extensive keeping) and those from location B (stabling). Sex did not affect the serum titer. Here, too, the younger animals had a smaller percentage of sera with a significant titer. No correlation between the titer of HI antibodies against virus A1‐equine/Prague/56 and antibodies against virus PI 3 in the same serum was observed. Some epizootiological aspects of the results obtained are discussed.
