Abstract
Two approaches to dealing with traffic congestion in urban areas in India are described. The first involves long-term planning of land use (housing and employment) and transportation. The second approach attempts to manage and influence the existing demand for transport in the short term. The conflicting demands of movement functions and access functions and the management of capacity, priority and demand are considered. The aims of comprehensive traffic management are described: congestion relief; accident reduction; improving public transport operation, integration and usage; and improvement in the environment. Traffic management models and packages such as TRANSYT and SCOOT are widely used to improve traffic flow.
