Abstract
Two simple general formulae are devised which relate amplitude and phase noise to accessible circuit parameters for most common typos of oscillator, including the van der Pol oscillator as well as the limited oscillator, and the gain-controlled oscillator. Their significance for oscillator design is then discussed.
