Abstract

The technique of staining with acridine orange for fluorescence microscopy of fresh animal and plant cells, chiefly for the detection of ribonucleic acid in the cytoplasm, was brought to a high degree of perfection by Schümmelfeder (1950) and has been developed further by Bertalanffy and Bickis (1956). Its employment for cancer detection in smears was reviewed by Bertalanffy, Masin and Masin in 1956.
