Abstract

This paper develops the magnetic aspects of a theory of polar substorms that was presented in an earlier paper. The flow of flux tubes associated with a substorm is considered. It is suggested that the polar magnetic substorm current system is the superposition of the usual Hall current system and the westward electrojet, which is Pedersen current produced by the southward motion of field line feet across the high conductivity strip resulting from auroral deposition.
