The energy shift due to the nuclear polarization is estimated for the ground state of the hydrogen-like 208 82 Pb and 238 92 U ions. In previous studies, only the contribution from the longitudinal nuclear polarization has been considered. We further calculate the contribution from transverse polarization as well. It is found that the transverse component is comparable to, or even larger than, the longitudinal component.
