Abstract The possibility of testing the thickness of a body assumed to be the source of an intrabasement anomaly by computing the observed field upward until the body begins to lose the characteristics of the intrabasement or thick-body anomaly and acquire those of the suprabasement or plate type of body was tested on on a magnetic profile across a volcanic outcrop in Pacific County, Washington. This example is of interest to petroleum exploration in basins having large volumes of extrusive rocks.--D.B.V
