Abstract
ABSTRACT At the end of the Tertiary, the valley of the middle Danube was covered by the fresh waters of the Pliocene Pannonian sea. The sparse and unique Pliocene fauna of this area and the lithologic characteristics of its sedimentary rocks permit no correlation with normal marine sediments or with those of the seas adjacent on the southeast. The strata, most of which are horizontal, have been broken by faulting. Their thickness, which is related to the marked relief of the basement, commonly is 2, 000 meters. The sediments of this sea in Austria, Hungary, and Yugoslavia contain numerous but not large natural gas and oil deposits.
