Statistical Characteristics of Seiches in Longkou Harbour

Amplitudes of seiches are generally very small in Chinese coastal waters with the exception of Longkou Harbour, where some extraordinary seiches have occurred. Tide gauge records over a period of twenty-three years, including 137 seiches with a maximum fluctuation greater than 40 cm, were examined. Preliminary results given here include variabilities of occurrences, distributions of mean periods, maximum fluctuations, and occurrence durations, along with a list of large seiches. In addition, an illustration of the seiche on 1 September 1980 with a maximum fluctuation of 293 cm is given.
