Abstract
Following successful treatment of a patient with falciparum malaria which was acquired in Vietnam, persistent gametocytemia was noted. Since recent studies suggest such gametocytes remain infective for theAnophelesvector, undetected gametocytemia could lead to the reintroduction of falciparum malaria in this country. Treatment with primaquine phosphate will eradicatePlasmodium falciparumgametocytes, and is recommended for prevention of transmission of falciparum malaria.
