Abstract

THE DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A HIGH-INTENSITY MERCURY VAPOR DISCHARGE LAMP MATCHING THE EMISSION COLOR OF ORDINARY INCANDESCENT LAMPS IS DESCRIBED. THE HISTORICAL APPROACHES TO THE SOLUTION OF THIS PROBLEM ARE REVIEWED. THE COLOR DESCRIPTION OF MERCURY VAPOR LAMPS IS TABULATED AND THE SPECTRAL POWER DISTRIBUTION OF A 400-WATT HIGH-PRESSURE MERCURY VAPOR LAMP WITH CLEAR OUTER BULB IS GRAPHICALLY REPRESENTED. SINGULAR CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MERCURY VAPOR DISCHARGE LAMP AND EARLY ATTEMPTS TO MODIFY THE MERCURY ARC EMISSION LAMP ARE DISCUSSED. MEANS WHEREBY THE PROPOSED LAMP ACHIEVES ITS COLOR OBJECTIVE ARE REVIEWED. THE COLOR QUALITY OF THE NEW LAMP IS DERIVED THROUGH THE USE OF A PROPER BLENDING RATIO OF MAGNESIUM FLUOROGERMANATE AND YTTRIUM VANADATE PHOSPHATE PHOSPHOR. FIGURES ILLUSTRATE HOW THE SPECTRAL POWER DISTRIBUTION OF THIS LAMP IS ACHIEVED. ALTHOUGH THE INVESTIGATION REPORTED HERE CONCERNED ITSELF WITH A 400-WATT LAMP, EQUALLY GOOD RESULTS HAVE BEEN REALIZED IN LAMPS OF OTHER SIZES.
