Abstract

Two main cell systems have been identified within the retinogeniculo-cortical pathways in primates. Magnocellular pathway cells project from the retina through the two magnocellular layers of the lateral geniculate nucleus; parvocellular pathway cells project through the four parvocellular layers. Parvocellular cells are more sensitive to chromatic properties of a stimulus, and magnocellular cells to rapid changes in achromatic contrast and luminance modulation.
