Open publisher page 43 citations

Abstract

This article addresses the role of digital technologies in redefining journalism. The research finds that the new media appear in the traditional news media mainly as a source of information rather than the originator of the news agenda or a platform for expressing public opinion. Data were gathered from the new media which were cited in the traditional media from 30 September to 30 December 2010. The analysis shows that the use of new media is driven by commercial considerations. Commercial concerns, rather than an attempt to improve the quality of news contents, largely determine how traditional media organizations use the new media sources.
