Abstract

Many complex pump parts can only be manufactured by the casting process, requiring close cooperation between the pump producer and foundry to achieve the required result. While the casting process itself remains largely unchanged, the advent of 3D computer aided design technology in recent years has greatly benefited foundries in improving the design of moulds for the successful casting of complex components, such as the casings of multistage pumps. Here Ian Francis, general manager of William Cook Hi-Tec, discusses several examples within the company in which the latest modelling and pattern-making technology have been used, and describes the benefits gained.
