Abstract
Since the Introduction of the intraocular implant, the role of the contact lens in aphakia has been problematical. A comparison Is possible between the two appliances, not only as to function, but also as to morbidity of pathology and the advisibillty of use over the whole spectrum of aphakia. The role of the contact lens can be considered as to the type of aphakia best suited for the appliance as well as with regard to the type of lenses now available and the practitioner's ability to use lenses in the extremes of age, i.e. infancy and senility. The subject is considered both from the aspect of bilateral and unilateral application and indications given where in the author's opinion, the intraocular implant may have a better prognosis.
