Abstract

ALTHOUGH the use of chemotherapeutic agents in the control of coccidiosis is as old as the poultry industry, a completely satisfactory coccidiostat is yet to be found. Since Herrick and Holmes (1936) showed the efficacy of sulfur against coccidiosis, the search for more effective, more efficient drugs has been continuous. Countless thousands of compounds have been screened but less than 25 have been widely used commercially (Reid, 1961). However, the appearance of resistant strains of coccidia (Kendall et al., 1945; Waletzky et al., 1954; Cuckler and Malagna, 1955; McLoughlin and Gardiner, 1962) or various harmful side effects have caused the usefulness of many of these compounds to be cut short. In spite of the widespread usage of coccidiostats for several years, coccidiosis continues to be a major problem in broilers, as well as replacement and laying flocks.
