Abstract
A new continuous adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) infusion test for 24 or 48 hr can accurately distinguish between normal adrenocortical function, primary adrenocortical insufficiency, and "secondary" adrenocortical insufficiency. It has the distinct advantage over previously used ACTH infusion tests in that it shortens by 2 to 3 days the period of hospitalization required in the evaluation of patients suspected of having adrenocortical insufficiency. The procedure for performance of the continuous ACTH infusion test and the criteria for diagnosis and differentiation between normal adrenocortical function, primary adrenocortical insufficiency, and secondary adrenocortical insufficiency are presented.
