Abstract
The major sources of mercury pollution in the environment are briefly discussed. The metabolism of inorganic mercury compounds is explained. The magnitude of mercury poisoning in Japan is discussed. The experiences which led to legislation against the use of methylmercury in Sweden are enumerated. The magnitude of mercury pollution in the US and Canada and the pathological and clinical features of mercury poisoning in man are discussed. The analytical methods used for the detection and measurement of mercury in tissues and sediments are briefly discussed. 75 references.
