Epidural Morphine or Butorphanol Augments Bupivacaine Analgesia During Labor

Abstract
Following placement of lumbar epidural catheters and injection of a test dose of 2 ml of 0.5% bupivacaine, 40 healthy parturients in labor received an 8 ml bolus of one of four solutions: 7 ml of 0.25% bupivacaine with 1 mg of butorphanol (Group I), 7 ml of bupivacaine 0.25% with 2 mg of butorphanol (Group II), 0.25% bupivacaine with 2 mg of morphine (Group III), or 0.25% bupivacaine alone (Group IV). Subsequent injections in all patients were with 0.25% bupivacaine alone.
