Abstract
Improved assessment of respiratory and laryngeal muscle function has revealed differences in respiratory muscle responses to chemical stimulation, and provided evidence that laryngeal muscles may help maintain lung volume in man. Radiological studies of the pharynx have shown that anaesthesia has multiple effects on pharyngeal dilator muscles. Understanding of respiratory muscle fatigue has improved and evidence of the importance of respiratory muscle blood flow is accumulating.
