Abstract
Israel's traffic safety history is played out against a backdrop of ever-increasing congestion as population growth and increases in the number of vehicles on the road significantly outstrip creation of new roads. Compared to other countries with similar per capita wealth, Israel has a high rate of fatalities per number of residents. It also has a greater pent-up demand for additional vehicle ownership and a much less extensive rail network, leading to increased risk of traffic dangers. Preliminary data suggest that a road safety program started in 1999 is reducing traffic-related injuries and deaths.
