Electrophoretic analyses of 23 proteins using extracts of eye, liver. muscle, and heart revealed 45 loci in Atlantic cod, 41 considered usable for routine analyses. Genetic variation was observed at 18 loci in two samples of Atlantic cod, and the average heterozygosities in these two samples are 0.100 and 0.130, which is larger than previous estimates based on fewer loci. Gene expression for Pacific cod is similar to that for Atlantic cod, except in one case where there are three loci coding for a protein (malic enzyme) in Atlantic cod but only two loci coding for this protein in Pacific cod.
