Abstract

Abstract A Discrete Element Model that is capable to describe degradation of ballast tracks in consideration of breakage of the ballast stones is presented. Strong rock is modelled as a granular solid by introduction of breakable bonds with suitable failure criteria between adjacent particles. Irregular angular stones are generated from the granular solid and their crushing strength is evaluated. The degradation process of a ballast bed is assessed and related to the damage occurring to the individual stones. (© 2012 Wiley‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
