Current Situation and Prospect of the Study on Sichuan Hakka Folk Houses

Abstract

The paper systematically summarizes the research achievements of Sichuan Hakka folk houses and puts forward a further research direction. These findings have shown that there are a large number of Sichuan Hakka folk houses in the two Hakka districts in Dongshan of western Sichuan and Longchang of southern Sichuan which have been investigated, surveyed and mapped, etc. From the perspective of architecture to obtain a great deal of first-hand data; moreover, in order to analyze the cultural values of the Sichuan Hakka folk houses, these researches have explored the relationship of the natural environment, climate, production, lifestyle and Hakka folk houses’ architectural image, structure, space, style as well as features between these two districts from the view of anthropogeography and cultural geography; accordingly, the scope of the study on Sichuan Hakka folk houses need to be further expanded in terms of the aspects of local economy, culture, customs, and cultural exchanges between Hakka and the surrounding areas etc.; it’s necessary to reflect on the protection and reuse from the aspects of Sichuan Hakka folk houses’ regional environment, the spirit of place, as well as original intangible cultural assets.
