Ultraviolet light induces ferroelectric domains in SrTiO 3 at low temperatures. The ferroelectric domains are related to anharmonic soft modes of the crystal. We show the sextic anharmonicity is the lowest order for the soft mode to give rise to ferroelectricity in SrTiO 3 after photoexcitation. The occurrence of a quartic anharmonicity and/or harmonicity for the soft mode potential will suppress the domain structure in the crystal.
