Abstract

Synopsis Nitrogen fertilization greatly increased dry matter and crude protein yields over a 4‐year period. Less frequent harvest improved the efficiency of N in terms of dry matter production but had negligible effect on crude protein. Plant nutrient removal by the forage was directly related to N rate. Separate of N, the K content and removal in forage were much more affected by N fertilization than were those of other nutrients.
