Abstract

1. Three anthocyanidins (delphinidin, cyanidin, and peonidin or pelargonidin) and three yellow pigments were detected in a chromatographic study of the upper lip, lateral lobes, and corolla tube of flowers of several genotypes of Collinsia heterophylla, C. tinctoria, and a number of species of Collinsia. 2. The presence or absence of an anthocyanidin or yellow pigment in a specific flower part was genetically determined in C. heterophylla and in C. tinctoria. 3. Certain pigments in specific flower parts of the amphiploid of C. concolor and C. sparsiflora could not be detected in either parental species. 4. Although differences in the distribution of pigments in different flower parts of species could be detected, it was not possible to correlate these differences with any known taxonomic relationships.
