Abstract
The compositions of silicic obsidian and perlite glasses do not extend the differentiation trend of the basalt-andesite-rhyolite late orogenic series, but clearly split into distinct sodic and potassic branches, originat-ing through liquid immiscibility in the melts. The contrasting compositions of these glasses are matched by the compositions of spherulites and matrix in silicic lavas, pointing to an origin by liquid immiscibility for these as well.
